Even at a young age, Dr. Kristin Gerard understood the unique and deep connections that people have with their pets. So, it was no surprise when she decided at the early age of 12 that helping animals and their people was to be her life’s work. From the moment she walks into the exam room, Dr. Gerard creates an authentic connection with her clients and patients through her genuine approach. She goes out of her way to hear your concerns and understand the unique relationship you have with your furry friend. This understanding allows her and the team at Guardian Veterinary Care to offer an individualized course of treatment that best meets the needs of your pet and your family.

Dr. Kristin Gerard graduated from the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine in the spring of 2007. That summer she moved to New York City to pursue a small animal medical and surgical internship. There, she trained under several specialists in surgery, internal medicine, critical care, dermatology, oncology and cardiology at a busy emergency and referral facility in the heart of the city. Following her internship, Dr. Gerard worked as a relief veterinarian in over 20 hospitals in the greater New York metro area. After a year getting to know area hospitals, she joined an emergency practice in Westchester County, NY where she earned a local award for Top Vets in Westchester based on her popularity with clients.

Throughout her career, Dr. Gerard has been interested in exotic animal medicine expanding the breadth of her knowledge about all species. Simultaneous to her internship she took on a 2-year zoo fellowship at the Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, NY where she was the solo vet for over 75 animals made up of nearly 30 species. During her fellowship she performed general checkups and routine surgical procedures on several species she wouldn’t see in a traditional practice.

After a few years in emergency medicine, Dr. Gerard met the man who would become her husband and together they moved to Westwood, NJ. Following the move, she got dual licensure in NY and NJ and started working full-time as an associate veterinarian at a growing hospital in Caldwell, NJ. She spent several years working in general practice and building a client following. Looking to expand the business, the practice owner entrusted Dr. Gerard to open a new hospital in a growing metropolitan neighborhood of Jersey City, NJ. Dr. Gerard set up software and inventory and worked with a small but very effective team in growing that practice over the summer and fall in 2013.

Missing mountains and family, Dr. Gerard and her husband relocated to the Pacific Northwest in late 2013. Upon her return to her home town of Portland, OR, Dr. Gerard reconnected with friends and colleagues from her veterinary school days. She took a position at a fast growing emergency practice in Portland where she met Dr. Roth.

While Dr. Gerard loves helping pets in urgent need of care, she also misses the deep connections with clients and patients that come from monitoring patients throughout their lifetimes with their owners. When Dr. Gerard and Dr. Roth began working together at an emergency hospital, they found they shared complimentary styles and a desire to give back to the community by creating a practice built around intention, compassion and balance. They solidified their connection on a volunteer trip to Thailand together where they provided veterinary care at an Elephant sanctuary.

Outside of work, Dr. Gerard is a European history junkie and loves true crime podcasts. She loves to spend her time off traveling with her husband and at home reading with her fuzzy family members curled up by her side.
